Volunteers with experience in education/social work, or volunteers with big motivation and empathy are needed for a project of non-formal education with kids/teenagers at a non-official shelter (occupied building) in Athens, where more than 200 displaced people are living.
We are a mixed team of professional and non-professionals volunteers passionate about Education and Active Pedagogy (Montessori, Freinet, etc.). Our aim is to support the kids living there to develop their intellectual and interpersonal abilities in a safe and reassuring space and also to facilitate their integration and schooling in the official system of education in Greece.
The program consists on the next subjects: Maths and English, chess/board games, art, and outdoor activities: park, basketball, skate... In the future we would like to do urban gardening and music as well (looking for collaboration)! Providing rules, a schedule and a structure for the kids is a priority for us, but as most of them haven’t been at school for a while (in some cases, never) and their living conditions are really difficult, our initiative is a big challenge.
In parallel, we work with the community living inside the shelter. We try to support the adults by providing information to them or accompany them for health issues or registration of kids at the Greek schools. Understanding the context where we are working and show respect and interest to the community living there is an absolute MUST to work with us.
We need volunteers seriously committed to the idea and the team, willing to help the project to improve. We will give you support and guidance and you will have the chance to be an active part of it. We are open to new ideas and suggestions and want to discover yours!
We need people able to commit for 1 month at least. However, if you have experience or a short project to propose to us you will be very welcome!
