Who We Are

Second Tree (www.secondtree.orgwww.facebook.com/SecondTree/) is a Greek non-profit and non-governmental organization based in Ioannina, Epirus. Second Tree was founded in January 2017 by a group of volunteers that had worked together in the Katsikas refugee camp. Since our inception we have worked with and supported refugee communities across the Epirus region and we continue to grow in our four key areas.

  • Integration – through workshops and activities that develop connections with the local community and economy; fostering an avenue for cohesion and unity.
  • Education – through non-formal English and Greek languageclasses for teenagers and adults delivered by qualified teachers
  • Community-Building – through a Scouts program designed to develop teamwork and life-skills in young people in the region
  • Support – through our non-formal children’s activities for 3-10 year olds

To address the absence of extra-curricular, values-based activities and empower the youth, we made the Scouts program a flagship project of Second Tree. We saw the benefits it reaped in Katsikas camp, providing a space for motivated young people to take on leadership roles and become role models for their peers.

The project takes inspiration from the global Scouting movement and aims to develop important life skills in young people, such as organization, collaboration, problem solving, negotiation and decision-making. This is done through group activities that are experiential, collaborative, educational and empowering. The activities follow the global Scout mantra and are divided into three key themes:

  1. Environment: Discovering and understanding nature through trips to local farms, hikes with mountain guides, environmental cleanups.
  2. Integration: Establishing contact with the host community and culture
  3. Education: Discussing important topics such as SGBV, environmental friendliness and healthy lifestyles in an experiential way in English; developing their English language skills in two dedicated classes (A0 and A1 levels);
