QR card system

What is the QR card system/ QR services The QR card system is a project to hand out a unique QR card to every refugee. The card contains a QR code that can be scanned with smart phones or laptops. With this card the card holder can get goods, food, appointments, etc. The software behind the QR code makes sure that the card holder gets only as much as he or she is entitled to. Eg. a community kitchen might give out one meal a day per person. With the card, this is ensured. Services A `QR service` of simply `service` defines what the QR card can be used for. After the service is defined, the service can read a QR card and count items distributed, add a card holder to a time slot or queue, add virtual currency to the card holder account, etc. There are three main function at present: count items, get position in a queue (with or without date) virtual currency/credit for shopping The Advantage The issuing of the card is done by a special team. The NGO is therefore released of any registration work. If you want to count the items you give away, just create a new service and scan the card when giving away the items. No more headache with registering people, typing numbers, etc. Just use the service on a smart phone, scan the card and the card holder is regeistered as having  received an item. How does it work in practice First, a new service has to be created. The service defines the items a card holder can get within a certain time span. E.g. 3 chai per day, 1 pair of socks per week, etc. After that, just open the browser on your smart phone and start the QR scanning. Then the service will count every QR card you hold into the camera. The scanning is so fast that it can read about one card in 2 seconds! If that is not fast enough, you can use multiple phones at the same time. Conclusion The QR card system makes registration for NGOs superfluous and processing very fast. It counts item receieved by each card holder and ensures that everyone gets as many items as he or should. This makes any distribution fast, fair, easy.

QR card project | update

The trouble with iphones and iOS Meanwhile it is quite easy to create html5 apps under android, we are facing some challenges that makes it unfeasible to offer support for iOS. The price of 99$ per year to offer an app to the app store Installing without app store is possible but not practical the QR code library to scan and decode the QR codes does not work on iOS slowing of development The current approach uses a web-based system (html5 with JavaScript) to scan and decode the QR cards. Neither html5 web cam access nor the instascan library is supported in iOS. This means that for iOS an extra non-html5 based app has to be developed. We don't have a programmer for iOS. Secondly, development would slow down significantly and make production more complicated as two branches have to be maintained. On top of that we would have to pay the yearly fee of 99$. All these points taken together make it unfeasible to develop for iOS. We therefore stick to a web-based approach based on html5 and javascript (GNU/linux based desktop systems, android on cell phones, windows).

QR card project | update

items per age : the diaper counter This function allows to declare how many items a card holder can get according his/her age. E.g a baby less than 6 months old is entitled to 36 diapers per week, between 6 months and one year the baby should get up to 24 diapers, and for the second year only 12. After 2 years no more free diapers.  These can now be entered directly to the settings. When the card (the baby card) is scanned, the system automatically decides how many diapers the baby is entitled for according to the age and the settings. There could be a give away of pencils for 7 year olds or  learning books for 13 to 15  year olds, etc. The clou: in case of diapers, the mother can send the son or the daughter to get the diapers. It is the (baby) card that is entitlted. The give away is much more simplified as the number of items to give away is shown on screen. (next function: no more babies! Google deep mind will give birth for you)

QR card Queue function allows to connect local ticket printer

I just created a little script that allows to attach a ticket printer to the queue system. The queue system is designed that first the card is scanned and the card holder gets a position in the queue, e.g. 235, and later the card is shown to get access. This system should reduce the chaos and the need for too many volunteers to keep the queue in order. It is now possible to attach a local printer that creates the tickets with the numbers so the card holder nows when it is her/his turn. The queue with position can be shown on a screen in public and on phones via web. Having a ticketing system might be a game changer for large queues with more than 250 people! Ticket printers cost new about $200. Contact admin for details.

Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Icelandic organisations and volunteers should advertise at greecevol!

At present 16.000 people all over Europe are known to volunteer for aid to refugees.  Greecevol has a focus on refugees in Greece or coming from Greece - collection of Medical supplies, food, wearables, funding for NGOs and temp projects, driving assistance, housing, communication, tearching, medical health, physical health, recovery and search, and much much more.  Many volunteers never visit Greece - they just give their time in their homeland. Greecevol is a GREAT database - but its missing calls for volunteers and aid INSIDE of national borders. IF you are a Danish volunteer running a project, or you are working for an NGO, greecevol is a great place to apply for volunteers. By maintaining a continued focus on the problems of refugees and migrants, we keep the flame alive - towards a hopeful and positive resulution to it all in the not too distant future. One can hope - but one can also work towards that goal. Thank you for listening.

Driving in Lesbos -- moving goods, bringing items to Greece, etc.

When bringing aid to Lesvos please be aware of the restrictions of the authorities. Please be aware of this before you come to Lesvos, although we are known as the island of solidarity the authorities here are becoming increasingly intimidating towards volunteers and those helping refugees. We do not hear of this amount problems on other islands or on the mainland even though people have to pass through these ports before reaching Lesvos. No foreign registered vehicles are allowed to move items inside Greece even if they are withing the 6 month allotted time! Fine 2000 euro and seizure of vehicle!!! Bringing items from outside of Greece in a foreign registered domestic vehicle 5000 euro fine and seizure of vehicle!!Moving goods around in none commercial Greek registered vehicles is also an offence and will result in number plate being taken and fines.Foreign registered vehicles can only be driven by the registered keeper, and may only remain in the country for six months in a year! Also be aware if you are driving here ensure that you are wearing your seat belt, that you have your driving license with you, if you are from outside the EU you will need an international driving license. Do not over load the vehicle with more passengers than it is licensed for. Be aware for turning restrictions. The incidents over the last weeks are to many to list, vans impounded, license taken, plates taken, please be extra careful!! Even moving items from a warehouse in Simi to lesvos resulted in many hours spent in customs, 2000 euro fine, van impounded, sniffer dogs brought in......the full treatment!! when they finally released the aid we had to hire a transport company to move it to the warehouse as they told us it was illegal to use our van. The original van remained impounded!!Also be aware if you arriving with aid in a suitcase, it is possible if you admit you are here to help refugees you may be questioned by the authorities. Stay Safe Everyone

Team Up 2 Teach: Education Collaboration Platform

Team Up 2 Teach has created a beta version of their education collaboration platform idea to test out in Athens and beyond through August.  The idea is to encourage teachers and NGOs providing non-formal/informal education programs to SHARE what they are doing, HOW they are doing it, WHY they are doing it - in order to leverage our collective knowledge and human resources to raise the quality of our programs and learning outcomes of our students - together!   There is so much incredible work going on that can inspire, encourage, and empower teaching peers to address their daily challenges (lesson planning, classroom management, student engagement, student growth and progress) to improve their practice.   If you are a teacher or program director in this space, please consider reaching out and contributing to their pilot.

I speak Arabic / Farsi / Urdu etc. How can I help?

Speakers of Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish, Urdu and more are needed all over. Many of the camps are a majority of one nationality. Please see www.bit.ly/howtovolunteeringreece (work by skill set) for a chart of camps organized by majority language. Also of course see the Volunteers Needed section of this site for specific calls (check the 'language' box when searching) and search the Teams directory for other organisations that need translators but which may not be actively recruiting.

FAQs | General
  6. August 2016

I want to come [on any date more than two weeks from now]. Will my help still be needed?

Short answer: yes. As for where...it's hard to say in advance, as the situation changes frequently. Please prep by reading http://bit.ly/howtovolunteeringreece. You can safely commit to buying a ticket to either Athens or Thessaloniki, then adding on tickets to specific destinations later. Reach out to various organizations, but understand that administrative support is limited, and you may not get a response immediately if your planned trip date is more than a few weeks away. It's stressful, we know...but trust that plans will fall into place and you will be useful in the end.

FAQs | General
  6. August 2016

Why isn't there a "Volunteers Offered" section? I'm sure my skills would be useful somewhere.

There are so many talented volunteers with great skills--but very few admins, and no one with the capacity to sift through a huge list of volunteers and their skills and trip dates.* This is why we leave it up to you to read the Volunteers Needed listings and browse the Teams directory to see what groups are working where, and decide which might be a good fit for you. (*Group coordinators: We don't mean to underestimate you; we're just basing this on past experience. If a volunteer database would be useful to you, please let us know: admin@greecevol.info.)

Will the Gulf of Tonkin Fit into the Red Sea?

The United States destabilized Yemen with a massive killing spree known as a “drone war.” The United States armed Saudi Arabia to bomb Yemen with jets, supplied the jets, supplied the bombs (and cluster bombs), refueled the jets midair, provided the targeting information, provided the cover at the United Nations, and deployed its ships to the coast of Yemen as part of its effort to achieve U.S./Saudi power in Yemen through mass murder and devastation. If one group or another or nobody in Yemen fired some harmless shots at a U.S. ship the outcome is the same: zero legal or moral or practical justification to continue or escalate the killing, and zero logic in calling such escalation “defensive.”

When Mosul falls, Isis will flee to the safety of Syria. But what then?

Robert Fisk on the motives behind the invasion of Mosul Syria’s army and Hezbollah and Iranian allies are preparing for a massive invasion by thousands of Isis fighters who will be driven out of Iraq when Mosul falls. The real purpose behind the much-trumpeted US-planned “liberation” of the Iraqi city, the Syrian military suspect, is to swamp Syria with the hordes of Isis fighters who will flee their Iraqi capital in favour of their “mini-capital” of Raqqa inside Syria itself.

Scott Ritter about alleged chemical attack in Ildib

By Scott RitterSource: Huffington Post Once upon a time, Donald J. Trump, the New York City businessman-turned-president, berated then-President Barack Obama back in September 2013 about the fallacy of an American military strike against Syria.  At that time, the United States was considering the use of force against Syria in response to allegations (since largely disproven) that the regime of President Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons against civilians in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta. Trump, via tweet, declared “to our very foolish leader, do not attack Syria – if you do many very bad things will happen & from that fight the U.S. gets nothing!” ...

Every NGO will be able to add services. Main advantages: the NGO does not have to issue cards. They can concentrate on the service. One card –plenty of services. The checking is very easy. Any cell phone can scan a card.• Mobile internet by cellphone easier than for laptop Checking is fast. Scan takes only few seconds. Card can be replaced in case of loss. Less cheating/black market.
