We are Movement On The Ground, a non-profit foundation responding to a humanitarian crisis affecting innocent men, women and children who have been forced to flee their home. Through structural, financial and voluntary support, we want to improve the living conditions of thousands of refugees currently living in camps on Lesvos and Samos. We believe that a successful response can only be achieved if small and large NGOs and entities work together in a collaborative environment. Our goal is to create a blueprint for refugee camps that will make camps more dignified, self-sustainable and, most importantly, that empowers the camp residents. We call this philosophy ‘Camp to CampUs’ and all of our work is centred around this.
On the 8th and 9th of September, fires burned down Moria Camp on Lesvos which caused 13,000 women, men and children to flee to the streets. Now, a new temporary camp RIC Lesvos is being built and Movement on the Ground has made the decision to work in this new temporary camp. Our aim is to ensure that we can apply our Camp to Campus philosophy to work together with the residents to make this new temporary camp a more dignified place of temporary residence. However, to meet this goal we are in need of more volunteers, especially ones with technical skills!
We are looking for someone who has good technical insight, is a skilled engineer or someone who you would describe as a handyman if you do not have a specific education related to this. Most important is that you do not give up easily when technical solutions need to be found and you are a creative problem solver. You are happy to be working on any technical task, whether it is a simple fix or a complex project. You are happy to drive to our suppliers, and depict and ship needed tools and machinery. The last, but probably most important trait is that you feel comfortable around working with a big, young, multicultural team, and you know how to connect with others. Your role will be to educate, facilitate and empower community members, therefore social emotional skills are a necessity.
